Dear Kindergarten Parents,
Welcome to the summer of 2020.
The teaching staff and administration at Corpus will be working throughout the summer break to provide information and answers to questions as decisions regarding the beginning of the school year are made.
I am excited and looking forward to meeting this year's kindergarten students and of course, in great hopes we can greet our new classes in person at Corpus Christi.
Please let me know if you did not receive an email letter that was sent to new kindergarten parents in mid-May. I will be happy to send you the information.
I hope each of you has a safe and enjoyable summer.
Many thanks to you,
Jan Dicker

Homework
Homework is not part of the kindergarten program. When a child is ill or absent important work that is missed will be sent home to be completed. Usually this can be overseen by parents.
If students are having difficulties completing daily assignments, parents will be notified.
The following is an overview of kindergarten curriculum:
Religion
All students will attend children's Mass each Thursday morning beginning around 8:10. Our class will be responsible for planning one Mass this school year. Religion is also taught as part of the regular curriculum. We Believe, God Made the World is the resource for kindergarten which reinforces a strong faith foundation based on 3 elements: beliefs, story, and celebration. This resource provides a balance among doctrine, Scripture, and the liturgical year. Bible stories will be read throughout the year. As part of the Faith Initiative, Kindergarten students will read stories and learn about Saints.
Students will have the opportunity to participate in Kindergarten Mass, All-School Masses, Special Masses, and the morning prayer. All students will participate in at least one of the these during the year.
Language Arts
The main emphasis in kindergarten will be helping young students learn phonics skills, read, and write. Each student will participate in a language arts block that will incorporate letter recognition, phonics skills, sight words, and reading skills. After students have begun reading, books that have been used for instruction will be sent home to be read and returned to school.
Daily 5 Daily Five is an instructional model that incorporates a strong literacy program promoting reading and encourages young children to become independent readers. During each instructional block literacy skills will be taught in a whole-group setting. Students will also meet in smaller group instructional settings. The National Standards' based "mini" lessons will be short and precise and will be taught in 15 to 20 minute reading instructional cycles. There are 5 activities that are carefully taught and reinforced during the first month of school. As students reading stamina increases, they will:
- Read to Self
- Read to Someone
- Listen to Reading
- Word Work
- Work on Writing
- Phonics instruction is an integral part of learning to read. Beginning reading abilities develop best in an environment where language is meaningful, functional, and on-going. The Sadlier phonics program provides systemic and explicit instruction. Students are given ample opportunity to guided and independent practice. for applying letter-sound correspondences.
The current math series used at Corpus Christi is Harcourt Math. This series is based on research that focuses on effective learning processes and instructional strategies that are essential for mathematical success. Four basic instructional strategies include:
1. Explicit Instruction
- Use of prior knowledge during direct instruction
- Guided practice to encourage independent work
- Concepts and skills regularly assessed
- Visual representation and modeling during instruction & practice
- Hands-on lessons, activities, centers, and assessments
- Use of concrete experiences promotes abstract learning
- Assess each student's skill level regularly
- Identify need for instructional intervention
- Allow for individualized instruction and/or reteaching
- Go Math teacher resource used with a variety of other kindergarten- instruction and instruction aligned with Kansas State Curriculum Standards and Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas Curriculum Standards
