ART
Mrs. Heather Salb
“Every artist was first an amateur” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

*Welcome to art at Corpus Christi!  I plan to update this page from time to time with new project ideas and updates on what we are doing in school.  IF we must move to a remote learning option at any point this school year, I will use this website to share and communicate with you and your children.

*I plan to work on the same projects/concepts that I typically have done over the past several years using various art materials and learning about many artists.  BUT, we will be working on the projects in different ways so that we are not sharing supplies.

*I will assign homework for a few of my middle school projects.  But it will be a fun activity that I have no doubt they will enjoy.

*Photography students will be asked to take photographs at home or on location to use during class week by week.  The photos will need to be added to a google drive folder that I will share with each student so they can access their images from school or home when needed.  Again, the homework will be fun, quick, and easy to complete.

COMING SOON!!!  New multi-media project!  I found a really exciting project called an Explosion Book.  I have never made one before, but have always wanted to try with one of my classes.  It is a multi-step process including drawing, painting, printmaking, folding, gluing, measuring and more.  I am creating a google doc with detailed instructions and a few videos to show the folding portion now.  Little ones will certainly need adult help.  The folding portion needs to be pretty precise for it all to fit together properly.  But it is something fun to do together as well.  Middle school students should be able to take this one on by themselves as a great challenge!  I'll post asap once I have the instructions with images completed.

Link is now ready for instructions to make an Explosion Book!  Please click the button above to check it out.  There are two video links within the document.  IF at any time you have a problem or need extra help, please contact me at HeatherS@cccparish.org and I will respond back to you as quickly as I can to help.  I hope you all enjoy the project.  It will be a challenge and opportunity to stretch those creative muscles!!
Planned activities for Art Week of March 23 through April 3 (2 weeks)

Kindergarten – Learning about Abstract artist Piet Mondrian.  We typically watch a short video showcasing Mondrian’s work to allow the students to see how his artwork changed over time from more realistic paintings, to the abstract style he is best known for.
Project – Each student begins with a 9x12 white drawing paper.  They use scissors to cut small square and rectangle pieces of paper out of the primary colors (yellow, red and blue).  These are then glued to the white paper to create an abstract design.  Finally, thin black strips of paper are used to add to the design to complete.

First Grade – Japanese Fish Kites.  Students each begin with a 12x18 sheet of white drawing paper.  The paper is folded in half lengthwise to make a long thin rectangle.  Students trace the outline of a fish along the open edge and cut with scissors.  Then the outside of the fish is decorated using crayons and markers.  Students can attempt to make it look like a real fish, or just be creative and add designs.  Both sides of the fish should be colored.  Next, long strips of tissue paper are added using glue along the outside edge of the fish and tail area.  All edges (not inside portion) are glued and the mouth is left open for stuffing once dry.  After the glue on the edges dries, then students crumple up pieces of scrap/recycle paper and stuff it in the mouth of the fish to puff it out, somewhat like a pillow.  Finally a hole punch is used to punch holes on either side of the mouth so a piece of yarn can be added for hanging the fish.

Second Grade – Learning about Impressionist artist Claude Monet.  Students begin with a 9x12” sheet of drawing paper.  We use cool color (green, blue, purple) oil pastels to add wavy lines to mimic the look of water, and shapes to mimic the look of grasses.  Crayons can be used for this step if you don’t have oil pastels at home.  Then we paint the entire surface of the paper with watercolor paints also in the cool colors.  I encourage the students to use mostly blue so it looks more like water.  But it’s always nice when they add bits of green and purple to blend also.  Once the painting is dry, we cut lily pads out of different colors of green construction paper.  I describe them to look like little Pac Mans.  😉  Then several lily pads are glued to the dried painting.  The final step is to add warm colored (red, yellow, orange and sometimes pink) tissue paper flowers to the lily pads.  We wrap a small square of tissue paper around the end of the eraser side of a pencil.  They add a small dab of glue and place the tissue paper on the lily pad.  Gently lift the pencil away and the tissue paper makes a 3-D flower.  The students can add as many flowers as the want.  The end products are always beautiful!

Middle School – We were planning to finish up our Chuck Close inspired paintings once we returned from Spring Break.  I will do my best to return all student artwork to them once we are allowed to come back to school.  All students have an art folder that contains their artwork throughout the year.  They are safely stored in the art closet for now.
Project idea:  Printmaking!  We normally do a printmaking project every year where the students carve into a linoleum block.  They then use brayers and printmaking ink to create many copies of their design in different colors.  I am 100% certain most students will not have access to these supplies at home.  So I think a monoprint project is a great substitute.

New project for Middle school and/or other ages!  I created a google doc with photos to describe how to make a raised foil relief design that I usually share with the middle school students.  I have also done this project with 5th graders, but maybe even younger kiddos will enjoy with some parent help.  Click this link below called "Raised Foil Relief Design" to take you there:
