Miss Katie Higgins
Math, Science & Religion
*Updated Weekly throughout the school year.
[Math Weeks of April 19 - May 3] This week we began studying chapter 9 Measurement. This chapter is in two parts, distance measurement (foot and inch) and time measurement (to the hour and half-hour). Last week we focused on distance and exported with rulers, finding objects in the room and comparing them (larger than or shorter than) the ruler. First grade standards require students to identify and write times to the hour and half hour. We learned both as students manipulated the hands on using small clocks. Students were asked to draw the hands on the clock and complete the analog clock form.
[Math Weeks of May 6- 10] We completed chapter 9. Every student has improved SO much this year! Proud Teacher Moment! We also went to the computer lab for a final SuccessMaker. This week and next week, we are discussing 2D and 3D shapes and exploring with shape blocks. In conclusion of the year, we are spending these three days perfecting our understanding of money. We will completing a money packet and using manipulative to identify value of each coin and compute numbers by adding and subtracting various amounts of money.
[Science Weeks of April 19 - May 3] This week, we learn about wind energy and how things move with wind. The overall favorite were the 'whrilly gigs' and dropping them off the second floor rotunda!
[Science Weeks of May 6- 10] We started a short unit on light and sound. We started by brainstorming various sources of light. We talked about how rainbows are formed and then went outside to blow bubbles! This was a lot of fun! We completed a worksheet drawing and naming sources of light. We also watched two Magic School Bus video (the kids are currently obsessed with MSB) discussing light and the formation of rainbows! This week is busy with Field Day and creating our Time Capsules.
[Religion Weeks of April 19 - May 3] We studied our holy mother, Mary. We discussed how the month or May is dedicated to Mary. We learned about her symbols associated with Mary such as the Immaculate Heart, the Lily flower, the royal colors, and how she is picture with St. Joseph and Jesus. We also spent St. Joseph's feast day discussing him. We colored a few pictures of Mary and of the Holy Family. Students preformed and perfected the Hail Mary prayer.
[Religion Weeks of May 6- 10] We memorized and perfected our Catholic prayers. Each day we read, rewrote and recited a different Catholic prayer required for first grade. The prayers included: The Sign of the Cross, grace before meals, the Glory Be, the Our Father, and the Hail Mary. We looked specially at the meaning of these prayers. We also showed our love and made Mother's Day art project.

Pringles Can Time Capsule
When I was in first grade, my class and I made individual time capsules filled with events that happened during our first grade year. The assignment was to keep the capsule until high school graduation. My mom hid the Pringles can full of memories away for eleven years and I opened it after I received my high school diploma (and then cried). I would like for my student to experience this too. This project will be started during this school year.
Please provide a cleaned Pringles can for your child by Friday, May 10th. We will use a the Pringles can to make a time capsule. The Pringles can has a lid and holds papers easily. If you are not a fan, you may provide a large can with a lid such as a coffee can or I can arrange a can for you. I will accept extra cans. Again, please rinse out the can.
The following activities will occur to complete the time capsule that align with academic standards, specifically Chapter 9 unit on measurement:
- Study of time (day, month, year)
- Study of the clock (to the hour an half-hour)
- Measure each student’s height with yarn
- Complete an “About Me” sheet
- Picture of the student in first grade and self-portrait drawing
- A writing sample
- Additionally, the capsule will contain a list of events that occurred around the world during their first grade year.
