Mrs. Mandy Shultz
4th grade Math/Science/Social Studies
I hope everyone has a great summer break with their friends and families. I can't wait to hear about everyone's adventures over the summer.
This is my 11th year at Corpus Christi teaching fourth grade. Fourth grade is the best year and fourth grade students are great! Corpus Christi is a wonderful family school and it is a great experience to teach here. I have a BA from KU in geography and anthropology and an elementary teaching certificate from Ottawa University. I am planning to apply for a masters in library science from Emporia State this summer. I have lived in Lawrence since I was six and have happily made Lawrence and Corpus Christi my family's home.
Math: We will be covering many topics in math in fourth grade. We use the Go Math! series and have textbooks that the students use to work through their lessons. We will cover place value, problem solving strategies, math facts (please practice over the summer!), multi-digit multiplication, long division, lots of fractions, decimals and geometry. Students will do a mixture of hands-on activities, group work, computer practice and problem solving in class. Students will take the MAPS test three times and they will take the Kansas State Assessments in the spring.
Science: The science curriculum includes plants and plant structures, animal structures, adaptations and ecosystems, erosion, weathering, rock cycle and the engineering and scientific process. We use the Science Fusion textbook series and supplement with many activities, experiments, computer research and group work. We have fantastic building and basic robotics sets that we will incorporate as well.
Social Studies: I am pleased to be adding social studies back to my classroom this year! Students will learn about basic geographical features and practice their geography research and map skills. Our focus in fourth grade is the regions of the United States. We will work our way through the history, economies, physical and human geographical regions of the United States. We will explore these areas with our textbook, projects, presentations and activities.
Students will have their English, language arts, spelling and religion class in the cooperating fourth grade classroom.
Corpus students also will have music, PE, Spanish, Art and Technology classes each week.
